Katy Perry and Russell Brand get tattoos together, issue publicist planted People story

I smell a publicist-approved rat in the curious case of Katy Perry and Russell Brand?s marriage, which is sort of strange because this should be a very calm period for the couple. Katy just concluded her world tour, and presumably, the couple should be enjoying some togetherness (and perhaps plan for that crisis vacation) without feeling the need to run and tell the public about their alleged happiness at every moment. Yet all of a sudden, they?re striking out with a barrage of PR-friendly moves. First, TMZ just released photos of Katy and Russell hitting a tattoo shop last week after her last concert in Los Angeles:

With BS divorce rumors swirling ? Katy Perry and Russell Brand permanently marked their happily married love last week by both getting tattoos after her concert in L.A.

Katy got a smiling peppermint on her ankle, while Russell marked his arm with the badge of his favorite soccer team, West Ham United.

Katy even proceeded to try her hand at the needle by inking brave legendary tattoo artist Bang Bang with the same peppermint symbol.

Katy & Russ are Mr. & Mrs. Branded.

Note that they didn?t get matching tattoos, not that it would matter anyway. Tattoos, matching or not, will never hold a marriage toether. Just ask Angelina Jolie (in regard to Billy Bob Thornton) on that one. At any rate, right before TMZ received the tattoo photos and published a week-old story, Katy started tweeting about rumors related to her marriage:

Katy ought to be careful about drawing humor-based, soap-opera allusions to the state of her marriage. She?s starting to sound like Guy Ritchie after the fact, but Katy?s never been known for her creativity. Anyway and after Katy started her tweet-denials, People magazine published a very obviously publicist-sanctioned report that speaks in glowing terms of Katy and Russell?s enduring love:

Katy Perry?s life is becoming a soap opera.

At least, that?s how the pop star sees it, given all the rumors surrounding her in recent days.

First, there was speculation that she was expecting, which she colorfully denied. Now, there have been rumors that her marriage is on the rocks ? something Perry also denied Wednesday night with a joke on Twitter.

?First I?m pregnant & then I?m divorced. What am I All My Children?!? she quipped.

Earlier Wednesday night, Perry helped announce the Grammy nominations at a live concert in Los Angeles, where she sported her wedding ring. (Perry also snagged two nominations herself.)

Perry, 27, and Brand, 36, were married in October 2010 in a lavish ceremony ? that included two elephants as well as acrobats and jugglers ? at a luxury resort in northern India.

Since then, they?ve had nothing but fawning words for one another in interviews, with Perry calling Brand her great man of God, and he gushing about his spiritual and emotional connection to his bride.

[From People]

I?m inclined to feel sorry for Katy at this moment because, let?s face it, it?s hard enough to hold an ailing marriage together without feeling the need to shout things from a pink-tinted rooftop. Still, the timing here is really odd, and they?d be much better off ignoring split rumors rather than dismissing them and getting the PR teams involved yet again.

At this point, Katy and Russell just need to lay low and enjoy each other if they can manage to do so. They?ve been separated for most of the first year of their marriage, and it?s time to sink or swim together as a couple. Not to run around and issue statements to the press about babies and alcohol and being cool. They just need to shut up and be together, which would probably do a lot more good for their marriage than running to the press every five minutes.

  2. used to think he was a dork, but then saw him on tv interviews and i really like him. very smart and into animals and such. i can see why she fell inlove with him.

    • Read his book. It?s brilliant but after reading how complex and insightful of a person he is(along with being a trainwreck). I doubt this marriage can last. Katy may be sweet but she?s really immature and she?s not committed to sobriety.

      • I so much agree with what you say, I don?t even want to ?ita? it. You just hit the nail on the head. Couldn?t agree more. Agree with the caricature, agree with the trying to convince the world?are you, like, related to one of them???

    • Are you sure it?s not just down to the accent and badboy costume? After I saw him in interviews is when I really started hating on him. The Dickensian precocious child routine gets old for me really really quickly.

  3. I generally loathe her tacky asethetic, but I can?t help but think a peppermint tatto would be kinda cute.

  4. I believe they are going through a rough patch, but I also buy that Katy does not want to get divorced and is taking the next year off to work this all out. It?s much healthier than just bailing out like so many other celebs do.

  8. I cannot stand Russell Brand. I cannot stand anything about the guy. His annoying voice, his hairy, dirty face, it gives me the creeps. He talks too slow, he speaks in cliches, he dresses like Stephen Tyler. It?s all so transparently affected and no one seems to see the sham of it all. Well, no one but Katy Perry, who is laughing all the way to the bank with him.

    • His fans totally see the ?sham? It?s ironic.

      • It?s only funny if no one can tell how hard you are trying to be ?ironic.? With him, it?s so obvious what he?s trying to do; it comes across as cynical contempt. It?s ugly.

    • THANK YOU SALLY, I LOVE YOU. He does a fair job of snowing under many females (SOMEHOW ?) that I would expect better taste of. He?s a fake rocker. You can?t get away with acting and dressing like a douchebag unless you can at least play an instrument or sing ? well. Otherwise, you?re just the same as the poser down at the mall.

      • Exactly. With most celebrities/comics/bands/acts that adopt a tongue in cheek persona, the audience is in on the joke. With Russell Brand, the audience IS the joke. He probably used to exercise his hostility by drinking, now he does it by acting like an ironic prick.

    • Exactly. You summed up my feelings to the letter.

  9. There?s only two people in a relationship (most of the time) if you?re happy, it will shine through everything and if you?re unhappy you?ll do everything to convince others it?s all fine. In both cases the only persons who should believe in the relationship to make it work is the couple itself, without having to feel to need for other?s acknowledgement. I don?t know why people always want to ?let the world know? how much in love they are. The world ain?t going to hold you together.

  10. I know it?s old fashioned, and probably un-feminist of me and all to say, but I still respect marriage and hate that so many people look at it as something disposable nowadays. I understand that there are marriages that people should get out of, but a lot of the celebrities you see seem to split for ?irreconcilable differences,? whatever that means.

I just get tired of us rooting for a wedding to fail. Marriage used to be a lifelong commitment. It isn?t anymore. And I know that maybe there?s a lot of sound and logical reasons for that, but there?s also a lot of reasons for it that are just hogwash.

Anyways, I?m not even really sure what my point was here in saying this. I guess I just wish that marriage could be taken a little more seriously by people, married or umarried.

    • There?s nothing unfeminist about believing that marriage, especially between two full-grown successful adults, should be a serious commitment. Choosing to work on a marriage, as opposed to leaving at the first sign of trouble, doesn?t automatically signal a lack of belief in the equal rights of women to self-determination and autonomy. I?m a lifelong feminist, and I agree that marriage should be a serious commitment; I try to reflect that in my own marriage. If it?s not a meaningful commitment, what?s the point?

    • Lairen,

I agree with you about the entirety of what you have said. However, while I?m not necessarily rooting for this marriage to fail, I think it?s highly probable considering: a. how short they knew one another before they married; b. Russell?s Brand?s past tendencies; c. the seemingly little amount of time they spend together.

But yes, I do wish that marriage were taken more seriously and that divorce were not the first option for many.

  11. I like them together, I hope they work it out. Although it?s gonna be rough if he?s sober and she?s not?

  12. How long did they date before they got married? If it?s shorter than a year, I don?t expect it to last much more than a year. Which is why the marriages don?t last ? they get married right away, divorce quickly. The Clash of the Ego Titans.

  16. Surprisingly, I feel a bit sorry for Katy (when I?m usually pretty annoyed by her in general). It just feels like the image she?s created as her ?public identity? is an unrealistic ?cartoon?. She works so hard to pass herself off this way, all smiles & bright colors (very much like the ?Circus? atmosphere she seems so infatuated with), that when the lights go off & she goes to bed at night, she has nothing left to put toward being *herself*. Maybe she feels that no one is really interested in her ?real? self?

You definitely can?t have a successful, good marriage that way. But what I wonder about? Is which version of ?Katy? is married to Russell (who has a very ?cartoony? image himself, but I get the feeling that?s who he really is).

I?m sure devoting so much time & energy into being an exhausting-unrealistic-caricature of herself, has her trying even harder to convince the world everything is ?great!!1!Luv4evr!!?. You try hardest when the strain is becoming most obvious to others.
