The Crap We Missed ? Tuesday 1.17.12

?Wait. I?m still alive??

Welcome to Tuesday?s The Crap We Missed where we find out that in the face of impossible odds, James Franco discovered a more irritatingly hipster way to perpetuate a junkie?s motto, Robin Roberts is about a second away from a judo chop to the jugular and Gisele Bundchen reminds us how cool it is to be a twin. If you happen to be her in that situation. Mom said she loves us both the same!

The Hoff screams at the entire continent of Australia at the end,

Sundance and Slamdance 2012: Documentary Preview

As I look back on my ?Sundance Documentaries People Will Be Talking About? column from last January, I realize this is my equivalent to other bloggers? annual ?Most Anticipated Movies of [the Coming Year]? list. Partly because to preview the docs playing at Sundance is usually to preview the docs we?ll be seeing in theaters in the next twelve months, as well as to spot some of what will contend for the Oscar in the following year. And partly because in retrospect I similarly had high hopes for films that didn?t really meet expectations.

However, those disappointments aren?t so much of a critical nature, the way Green Lantern and The Hangover Part II might look in hindsight with a glance at movie previews from a year ago. They?re films that either were great but unfortunately weren?t talked about enough (How to Die in Oregon; Resurrect Dead; If a Tree Falls) or weren?t as popular at the box office as I envisioned (Project Nim; The Bengali Detective; Life in a Day). Also, like other bloggers comparing their year-end ?Best of? list with their year-start anticipated list, I see a few titles I didn?t include in my 2011 Sundance preview that took me by surprise (Senna; We Were Here; Hell and Back Again) and even ended up on my own ?Best of? list -- in fact nine Sundance ?11 titles made my list of Top 20 docs of the year.

What will be this year?s big doc sensations? I can?t be sure, especially since we?re still more than a week away from Opening Night and I?ve only heard minimal buzz on some titles and haven?t yet seen a single one. So far I can only recommend one doc playing Park City this month, the Slamdance dairy farm doc The First Season, but while this terrific verite exploration of generation and restoration among a family and its cows is worth seeing, it isn?t really fodder for huge discussions. More provocative Slamdance offerings should be the child boxing film Buffalo Girls, the transgender teen prostitute film Kelly, the amateur porn doc Danland, the ALS grafitti artist profile Getting Up: The TEMPT ONE Storyand the Anonymous profile We Are Legion: The Story of the Hactivists (pictured above).

Lindsay Lohan Praised In Court; Served With Crazy Lawsuit?

Lindsay Lohan was in court today for a probation check-in with Judge Sautner. The Judge praised her for her efforts and if she stays on course, she?ll be off probation March 29th.

Lindsay is scheduled back in court on February 22nd and must complete 15 more community service hours before then, along with 5 hours of therapy.

As Lindsay headed to her hearing this morning, she was served with a bizarre lawsuit. TMZ reports that the 12 page lawsuit reads like a whole lot of gibberish:

From what we gather, the man who filed the claim, Thomas A. Green, alleges Lohan communicated with him via Facebook and led him to believe she would participate in a dot-com business he wanted to create.

It appears Green feels he was duped ? and when he pressed Lohan about her true intentions, he uncovered a conspiracy about the killing of Bin Laden.

He also randomly includes a line about believing that she might be a high-end prostitute.

Um. Okay. I know she has a lot of lawsuits and legal woes, but this one sounds a bit overboard. TMZ also notes that the man has suffered periods of delusion and hallucinations.

Golden Globes Well Played Carpet: Diane Lane

?Pssst.?

?Hey. You. Yeah, that?s right. Remember me? I?m nominated tonight for something nobody watched? AndI?m playing Superman?s mother in the new movie? Well, I just thought I?d pop by to remind you that I?m crazy f?ing beautiful and you should LOOK OUT.

?That?s right. I?m hot. I?ve been hot since about 1982. I am a non-stop hot. I?m a direct flight from Hot Angeles International Airport to London Hotthrow. I don?t age. I don?t have a portrait in my attic nor the blood of innocents in my coffee. I?m JUST REALLY REALLY GOOD-LOOKING. I make Derek Zoolander feel homely and small. So it?s okay that you didn?t know I was nominated, or that you probably didn?t watch Cinema Verite. Because a) I will see you at the Multiplex, when my insanely hot Martha Kent adopts that Clark kid and everyone is all, ?What up, SuperMILF,? and b) because at the end of the day, I get to wake up looking like this every f?ing morning and it is AWESOME.?

Michelle Williams goes fragile, weepy and ?sexy? for GQ, talks about Heath Ledger

It seemed crazy at first. Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe? We all knew the two-time Oscar nominee could act?but could she make us drool? America, we have our answer. And what Williams gives GQ in drop-dead gorgeous photos, she equals in insights regarding her incredibly emotional journey thus far. Correspondent Chris Heath meets with Williams in two different cities over three days, and the pair discuss everything from living on her own at age 15 to avoiding playing sexy characters (?I mean, sexuality has been a part of my work, obviously?but it?s never been sexy, it hasn?t been beautiful?) to her imagining she would end up with Heath Ledger (?It?s actually one of my favorite places to visit?).

She?s not drawn to the darkness: ?Maybe when I was in my early twenties and my late teens, I was more prone to sitting in it or lacerating myself with it,? she says. ?Now I want to move out of it. I have a daughter. I want a happy life.?

On her education, and how she ended up being home-schooled (a better fit with her acting work):
Her last formal school was Santa Fe Christian in San Diego; later its principal would denounce Williams after she appeared in Brokeback Mountain. (?Michelle doesn?t represent the values of this institution,? he said. ?She made the kinds of choices of which we wouldn?t approve.?) ?It didn?t really bother me,? she says, when I allude to this. No twinge, I ask, when you suddenly found out that you?d been living a sinful, artistic career? ?It wasn?t any surprise to me,? she says. ?I knew. I remember my mother saying to me at one point, ?Just don?t make anything your grandmother couldn?t see.? And at that point I knew I was living a sinful artistic career, because I had done, and I knew I would do.?

Being legally emancipated at 15: When Williams legally emancipated herself from her parents at 15, she didn?t do so because of any family schism, but for the independence and the practical advantages?she says she no longer needed a tutor and could work adult hours. When I suggest that it was pretty ambitious and self-contained to think she could handle it, she agrees. ?It was just stupid. I didn?t know what I was taking on,? she says. ?I don?t think things through very often?I don?t project into the future about how a situation will turn out. Even the simplest things, I?m guilty of making really bad decisions a lot of the time. In my work it?s a capacity that?s served me well, but in my life it can be a problem.?

On playing a bad girl on Dawson?s Creek: ?I wouldn?t say that that would be one of my first qualities as a human being?being sexy,? Williams reasons. ?And I think because my character on Dawson?s Creek was sexy?sexualized?sexual?I saw all the negative attention and connotations that can come along with that. And that those things can keep people from seeing you clearly.?

On Brokeback Mountain: ?I didn?t know what to make of it,? she says. ?Maybe when you see something different for the first time, you don?t know how to categorize it. It doesn?t really fit with anything else. Like the first time you listen to Bjrk. The first time you eat sashimi.? She hasn?t seen it since. But she does know what she thinks of it now. ?I think it?s a great film. And?it?s probably obvious but?? She pauses for a long time, and when she picks up the thought her voice is quieter and higher: ??well, he?s really quite astounding in it. Heath.?

How she and Heath Ledger were drawn to each other: ?There?s an answer that I know,? she says, ?but I don?t want to say.? She talks around this not-saying for a while, then says, ?Our initial meeting, the circumstances of how we first met, were cosmic or something.? They were together through the shoot, and soon she was pregnant. ?Yeah, a lot of things happened at once,? she says. ?It?s a bit like: We had a lot of things to do, because we didn?t have a lot of time, or something.?

Dating after Heath?s death: She explains that a year or two ago, she was putting herself under a lot of pressure to find someone new to spend her life with, for a particular reason. ?Because I really wanted, and I really expected or imagined, that Matilda would have siblings that were close to her age. I wanted that for her. But I couldn?t make that happen. And now that she?s 6 that isn?t even a possibility anymore. So something that was making me feel impatient, that?s been removed. For whatever reason, that?s not our luck, or our path.? A further thought. ?You know, as hard as certain things have been for me, it?s been harder thinking about how things will be for her. I have a lot of things that she doesn?t, and some of what I have I can give to her?the memories that I have, the objects that I have, the physical reminders that I have, the stories. But she won?t really have any that are solely?? And that is where that sentence ends.

Was there a part of her that imagined she and Ledger would have somehow ended up together? ?That would make me way too sad to answer,? she says quickly, and I hurriedly begin another question, about something completely different, hoping that if I say it fast enough these new words will chase the old words away from where they are hanging in the air between us, and maybe she will let me pretend that it was something I never said. ?No, no,? she says, and I can see the tears forming, and I think she means that she doesn?t want to answer any more questions about anything. I mutter some kind of apology under my breath. But, even now, I?m wrong about everything. Mostly she is just trying to stop my new question. She has something to tell me. ?No,? she says. ?I said it would make me too sad to answer but it?s also???and she nods even as her voice breaks once more with tears???one of my favorite things to imagine.? And through the tears, a beaming, almost beatific smile stretches room-wide across her face. ?It?s actually one of my favorite places to visit.?

Rooney Mara, the star of David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Vogue Magazine November 2011

Rooney Mara, the star of David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Vogue Magazine November 2011

Rooney Mara, the star of David Fincher's upcoming Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, graces the cover of this month's Vogue with a profile by Contributing Editor Jonathan Van Meter.

The November issue hits newsstands nationwide October 25th, but the cover story is available now on Vogue.com:

It's approaching midnight, and the June sun is winking on the horizon, still hoping to conjure one last moment of spooky beauty for the good people of Stockholm. Rooney Mara, David Fincher, and I are walking home from a two-bottle-of-wine dinner at their favorite caf, around the corner from Ingmar Bergman Plats. Both of them have been living in Sweden, on and off, since the previous summer, shooting one of the most anticipated movies in years: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As we pass the Royal Dramatic Theatre, where Greta Garbo studied as a teenager, Mara points to the clock tower in Gamla Stan, silhouetted in the distance, and reminds Fincher that when it strikes twelve it will be exactly one year to the day since he first auditioned her to play the part of Lisbeth Salander, arguably the most coveted role for an actress since Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind (another film adaptation of a wildly popular book featuring a shrewd, complicated, difficult-to-love heroine capable of slaying a man).

"Really?" says Fincher. "A year ago tomorrow?" He shakes his head in disbelief and then fishes a vibrating phone out of his pocket: "Hello, Amy." It is the co-chairperson of Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal, the studio head who, if this movie takes off, will surely get credit for having greenlighted the first truly adult franchise to come out of Hollywood since the early seventies, when movies like The Exorcist--not Twilight--were winning the terrified hearts of audiences everywhere.

Matt LeBlanc Jokes About Possible 'Friends' Reunion -- 'I Could Use the Money'

0_aqhvnxni_0_mq0w8cj4
He was probably kidding -- but Matt LeBlanc told TMZ he'd consider doing a "Friends" reunion somewhere down the line ... if the price is right.

Matt was leaving Craft restaurant in Los Angeles with his GF Andrea Anders Saturday night ... when we asked if he'd ever considering getting the old gang back together.

LeBlanc replied, "I wish ... I could use the money."

Fun Fact -- the "Friends" cast made more than $1 MILLION per episode back in the day ... and he JUST won a Golden Globe ... but still, anything's possible if the check is big enough.

Julianna Margulies Catches A Flight

LAX must be one busy airport for celeb watching today! Julianna Margulies was seen arriving at the airport for a flight today with her husband, Keith Lieberthal.

The couple looked casual and chic as they pulled up to unload their bags. What did you think of Julianna?s dress last night at the Golden Globes? I like it. I don?t love it, but I think she looks nice and understated.

Early Edition: Blake Lively Ready for 'Savages'; New Director for 'Wolverine'; More

Blake Lively might not be taking her planned trip down the Yellow Brick Road. Lively, who won critical acclaim for her role in Ben Affleck's 'The Town,' is now first in line for the female lead in Oliver Stone's 'Savages,' a story about two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins who are forced to work for a Mexican drug cartel after the free-spirited girlfriend they share is kidnapped, according to Variety.

Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch have been in talks to play the two male leads, with Benicio del Toro negotiating to be one of the cartel enforcers. If Lively is in fact offered the part, she may have to give up the role of Glinda the Good Witch of the East, which she was considering, in Sam Raimi's 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' for Disney. 'Savages,' which Stone will write and direct for Universal, is being eyed for a June start date.

'Wolverine' may be coming off hold soon. According to TheWrap, Fox has shown an interest in having Duncan Jones direct the film and Jones, in turn, is interested. As you'll recall, Darren Aronofsky was originally going to direct, but he pulled out in March because of scheduling issues. And since the film was to shoot in Japan -- the story line has Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, traveling to Japan to learn from a Samurai master -- the production was further delayed by the earthquake and tsunami that shattered that country. Jones, the son of David and Angela Bowie -- directed the recent 'Source Code' and cult film 'Moon.'

Matt Reeves, who made a splash as writer/director of the chilling 'Let Me In,' has been tapped by Universal to write and direct a feature based on John Carpenter's 'They Live.' The 1988 film -- which starred pro wrestler Roddy Piper -- centered on a takeover of the Earth by aliens who cloaked themselves in human form. Piper finds a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the aliens, and he helps foment a revolution against the invaders. Reeves also directed 'Cloverfield' and was a creator, writer, director and executive producer of the WB series 'Felicity.' [The Hollywood Reporter]

Alec Baldwin will be starring in Woody Allen's next film which, as is the New York director's modus operandi, has no title yet. According to Deadline, Allen has just begun putting the comedy together and may be tapping Jesse Eisenberg ('The Social Network') for a lead. The film will be shot in Rome.

Relativity Media has hired 'Crazy Heart' writer/director Scott Cooper to direct 'Out of the Furnace,' a spec script bought in 2008 about a man who, after being released from prison, just wants to lead a normal life and marry his girlfriend ... but finds himself avenging his brother's murder. [TheWrap]

Tom Wilkinson will join Samuel L. Jackson in the indie thriller 'The Samaritan,' about a former grifter (Jackson) who wants to go straight after a 20-year prison stay but gets involved in a con with the son of his former partner. Wilkinson will play a crime boss also taking part in the grift. The film is filming in Toronto and Rio de Janeiro for an early 2012 release. [Variety]

When Thomas Jane popped up on TV last night, I must admit that I screamed at Heather, ?OH MY GOD HEATHER HEATHER THOMAS JANE LOOK HEATHER LOOK AT WHAT THOMAS JANE IS WEARING LOOK:?

He?s straight out of Bonanza, you guys!

But don?t worry. I know what you really want to know. Is he wearing shoes? Behold:

Yes. And also every thing else in the world: a vest, a hat, a loudly patterned tie. And perhaps no underwear, given how?things seem to be hanging, not to be indelicate. Hey, maybe he looked in the mirror before he left the house and decided THAT would be the one thing he took off.

[Variety]

DVD OF THE WEEK: Night and Day

DVD OF THE WEEK: Night and Day

by Vadim Rizov

Night and Day

Hong Sang-soo's films riff off of and build upon each other, which makes it unfortunate that 2008's Night and Day is one of only four Hong films to see an American DVD release. A key shift took place in 2005's A Tale of Cinema, which introduced voiceover and zoom lenses to his work, elements which he's wielded with increasing aggression since. Before 2005, it's safe to generalize that his films dealt in semi-tragic depictions of men callously taking sexual advantage of women without much agency or say in the matter. 2006's Woman on the Beach ends with said female pushing her stalled car over the sand (a physical, non-precious metaphor for Doing It Herself), and subsequent films have been bolder at both reusing the same basic plot ingredients?a confused film director, a love triangle/quadrangle, no real resolution, overlapping cast members?and giving women the final say. The tone's veered closer to overt comedy in recent years, and Night and Day's meandering 146 minutes are shaggy-dog humor, defusing potentially painful situations and playing them for counter-intuitively genial laughs.

Night and Day

Having fled South Korea to avoid prosecution for smoking marijuana, painter Kim Sung-nam (Kim Yeong-ho) arrives in Paris. Time is marked with the kind of detailed titled cards normally reserved for military advances and Tony Scott movies: on August 7, Kim lands at the airport and gets told by a sinister stranger (for no apparent reason!) to be careful. August 9, he ventures into the backyard to smoke and vows in voiceover to make a fresh start. The next day Kim goes out through the front door this time, notes the air is exceptionally clear and non-humid for a city, then goes right back inside. August 11, he finally ventures outside his boarding house's confines (to get more cigarettes), finally plunging himself back into the usual Hong vortex of sexual confusion and dishonestly articulated impulses.

Idle hands are famously the devil's workshop: with his extremities unoccupied with art, Kim tries arm-wrestling, elaborate hand-shakes (doing a half-assed bro-pound with his boarding house's proprietor), awkwardly fondling the three women he gets involved with, and?most ill-advisedly?quoting the Bible at ex-girlfriend Min-sun (Kim Yu-Jin). "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off" (Matthew 5:30), he intones?this after bringing her to a hotel room, 10 years after the end of their relationship, a few years after his marriage, and mere days after learning she had six abortions without telling him while they were a couple.

Night and Day

Kim's voiceover is sincerely stupid?a major shift after the actions of men in films like 2004's Woman is the Future of Man, whose dueling frenemies both hook up with the same young lady in 24 hours; she hopes one is sincere, but they're both borderline evil in their insensitivity. Kim's actions are unintentionally negative rather than cynical: "We dated ten years ago but she seems to be angry with me," he notes of Min-sun, his confusion bizarrely unempathetic considering he couldn't even recognize her on the street. Nonetheless, he's aware that there's something wrong with his behavior, at one point breaking down into tears: "I've looked down on people," he weeps, before vowing to see only the good in people. It doesn't last.

Kim Yeong-ho is built like a linebacker; this is his first appearance in a Hong film, but he returned in 2010's Hahaha as Admiral Yi, a 16th-century Korean hero of naval warfare. This is the kind of intricate casting and character-tweaking Hong's restaging of similar situations allow for, and why it's a shame his work isn't more easily accessible: in Night and Day, Kim's character declares (for no explained reason) in a conversation with a fellow painter that van Gogh was a "good person," which leads to a debate over whether or not purposeful simplifications and distortions of historical people are merely dumb or can actually serve a useful purpose in the present. In Hahaha, a similar debate about whether or not Admiral Yi's heroism has been overstated leads to a tour guide's tearful declaration that no contemporary man could possibly live as well and kindly as Yi. Kim subsequently shows in dream form as the Admiral himself, to berate Hahaha's typically flawed male protagonist and urge him to see only the good in others?an impossible project his own character attempted in Night and Day.

Night and Day

There used to be a grim, blackly comic vibe to Hong's work, but this is one of his most amiable films, the story of a bumbler rather than of a straight-up heartless monster. One of the running gags is how?despite being set in Paris?hardly any French people are seen; instead, Korean students and migrs cluster together in closed social circles, recreating their usual pathologies without any regard for their setting. There are women on the beach here too: no matter where Hong's characters are, they're always drawn to the same conditions. The title refers to Paris' long summer nights: we have trouble telling night from day, the boardhouse proprietor tells Kim. It's a simple analogy for the puzzlement Kim has for telling dream sequence from reality and his true impulses from his would-be moral moments, but he's not treated unkindly: Night and Day is lucid about his genuine confusion, a sharp story about a mixed-up man.
