It's official. Mel Gibson is a rat ... a mall rat ... who dotes over his daughter Lucia on a carousel in the middle of shopping madness.

We got this video of Mel and Lucia at the Westfield Mall in Canoga Park, CA, yesterday, where Mel seemed to blend right into the crowd.

Pretty amazing how things can change in a few months.
